Summer REU Opportunity at Northwestern!

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, and molecular electronics.

Conference 'n Stuff

Hey NSBE FAM,

If this is your first email from us, I'd like to take the time to say Welcome! And thank you for showing your interest and support to the National Society of Black Engineers! I hope you all enjoyed our First General Body meeting of the semester! It was good to see all of you back and ready to start your semester off right, with NSBE of course ! As I mentioned in the last email, we have many things planned for you all this semester, so keep your planners, calendars, and agendas ready; you don't want to miss out!
The first  $50 installment for those going to Nationals is now due FRIDAY!
We have extended the date to accommodate those who are still willing to pay. Please stop by the office (EGN room 139) today, from 12:00PM - 1:00PM or 3:00PM - 6:00PM to pay your money to Charles ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.   • We will all meet at Millican Hall and split up into 2 teams for the 2 different locations - it's a Black & Gold competition!
  • Those going to Nationals who participate in this fundraiser will receive a percentage of the proceeds made to help cover some of the costs of going to Nationals.
  • If you aren't going to Nationals, please come out and support the cause! To do all of the great things we have planned for you this year, NSBE needs $$ and we need your help!
  • If you do not drive, there will be a carpool meeting in front of Millican Hall (where the buses meet) starting at 11:00AM, we will be leaving at 11:30 with or without you, so please be on time.

Our goal for this year is to continue to leave a legacy or NSBE UCF to build on year after year and continue to grow stronger as a chapter.

    • New approach in how the meeting is structured
    • Talk with Old and Current Executive Board members

Professional Development Workshops
How To Work a Career Fair - Part 1
January 31st from 6 to 7PM in Career Services - Right before the INSPIRE meeting, you can attend both if you are interested!
    • You will learn tips and advice for things you do and do not want to do at a career fair
    • You will learn how to start conversation, sell your resume, and ultimately impress the recruiters.
Interview Workshop - Part 2
February 2nd from 6 to 7PM in Career Services
    • After you succeed in the career fair, you will learn how to do well at the call back interview
These are two workshops you do not want to miss, especially those going to the career fair coming up and those going to Nationals!

The 38th Annual National Convention
Wednesday, March 28th - Sunday, April 1st, 2012 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center
    • The Registration fee is now $150 and will go up to $215 on February 15th, 2012
    • Lodging for our chapter is at the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown.
    • Our chapter is taking 35 students to convention. There are currently 9 spots left, so please register ASAP if you have not already done so.
Convention has a heftier price than FRC so get ready to fundraise!
    • A $50 deposit is due on or before Friday, January 27th, 2012 and late payments will not be accepted. Since Earlier = Cheaper, the earlier you pay the $50, the better. We need full participation when it comes to paying convention fees on time.
Additional payments will be paid in installments and the amounts are to be determined. The deadlines for these deposits are:
    • Friday, February 10th,
    • Friday, February 24th, &
    • Friday, March 9th,
However, you may pay all at once if it is in your power to do so. The final payment will be reduced according to how many fundraising events you participate in.
How To Register for National Convention!
1.       Go to nsbe.org
2.       Login. Not a member? Register to Join NSBE.
3.       Once you have logged in, select Register for an Event.
4.       Look for NSBE 38th Annual Convention and on the right-hand side, select Register for this meeting.
5.       Fill out any necessary information. Type the "University of Central Florida" chapter and select the "Collegiate Affilate" option.
6.       Answer any remaining questions and pay

Buick Scholarship Program
Deadline Date is February 29, 2012

Applicants to the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program must: 

    • Be high school seniors, high school graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduate students.
    • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at a U.S. based accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2012-13 academic year. Proprietary and online schools are not eligible.
    • Plan to major in a course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business related programs of study. See the list of eligible majors at their website:http://www.buickachievers.com/faq/#majors
    • Demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries using these areas of study.
    • Be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States
